“The Challenges Facing Presidential Libraries: Improving the Declassification System and Providing Nonpartisan Public History” with the founding director of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum (2007-2011), current Columbia University SIPA Senior Research Scholar, and well-recognized presidential historian, Tim Naftali, on July 2nd at 5:30pm ET.
Prior to coming to Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, Mr. Naftali was a clinical professor of history and public affairs at NYU. Before serving as the founding director of the federal Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum — where he curated a nationally recognized nonpartisan permanent exhibit on Watergate and oversaw the release of 1.3 million pages of records — Naftai was a historical consultant to both the Nazi War Crimes Interagency Working Group and the 9/11 Commission. He has also authored, co-authored, or edited 13 books, including the Cuban missile crisis thriller “One Hell of a Gamble” with Aleksandr Fursenko, a biography of George Herbert Walker Bush and histories of US counterterrorism policy and of presidential impeachment. Since 2016, Naftali has been a CNN regular contributor and has appeared in dozens of historical documentaries, most recently the Netflix series, “Turning Point: The Bomb and the Cold War” and CNN’s “Secrets & Spies: A Nuclear Game.”
