Last month, the Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY 2024, which included an entire title on classification reform. This is the result of legislation sponsored by four bipartisan members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence: Chairman Mark Warner and Senators John Cornyn, Ron Wyden and Jerry Moran. We anticipate enactment of the NDAA by the end of the calendar year, hopefully with this critical piece of classification reform intact. This group can play a meaningful role in ensuring inclusion of this reform as the NDAA is conferenced with the House. And assuming adoption, this group can support next steps for speedy implementation.
This declassification workshop, “The Senate’s Classification Reform Act: After Passage, What Does it Need to Succeed?” featured comments on the legislation’s status and its proposed reforms from intelligence committee staffers Jon Rosenwasser, the committee’s Budget & Policy Director, and Nicolas Adams, Professional Staff Member and committee designee to Sen. Cornyn.
